Neurodiversity recognizes that brain differences are natural human variations, not deficits. It encompasses conditions like autism, ADHD, and dyslexia. This paradigm shift advocates for acceptance, inclusion, and support for diverse neurological functioning, valuing the unique strengths and perspectives neurodivergent individuals bring to society. This engaging, interactive course is designed to move past basic legal requirements, offering practical tools and empathy-building exercises to proactively support and leverage the diverse talents of neurodivergent colleagues and citizens. Who is it for? This workshop is for any team that needs an increased awareness of neurodiversity. It provides learners with key areas of knowledge and explores best practice. The one day workshops are active, visual and fun and reflect our positive style and positive philosophy. They’re available for schools, residential services, learning disability/mental health teams. Course aims and objectives:
Areas covered will include: History and context Equality – law, policy and practice SPATS model (Sensory, Perceptual, Ability and Thinking Systems) Experiences of neurodivergent people Definitions, terminology and personal choice Diagnosis and disclosure Attitudes towards neuro-divergent people Neuro-affirmative practice Universal design - principles and practice AVAILABLE AS HALF/WHOLE DAY 'FACE TO FACE' OR 2 HOUR ONLINE ZOOM SESSIONS
Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to: • Explain what neurodiversity means and the difference between viewing it as a medical problem versus a neurological difference. • Recognize the different ways common neurotypes, like Autism (ASD), ADHD, Dyslexia, and Dyspraxia, can appear. • Describe the unique strengths (e.g., hyperfocus, pattern recognition) that neurodivergent people bring to work. • Use simple, effective accommodations (like sensory adjustments and flexible work) to create better inclusion. • Communicate and give feedback clearly to reduce misunderstandings and build stronger working relationships. • Help build a culture where people feel safe to be themselves and take specific steps to make the team more inclusive right away. |
