Pica: Understanding and responding
Pica – an eating disorder often misunderstood and shrouded in stigma. As care professionals, we play a vital role in supporting individuals and families affected by Pica, and building awareness is the first step towards effective intervention and care. Pica goes beyond simply ingesting unusual or non-food items. It's a complex condition characterised by the persistent craving and consumption of non-food substances. Throughout this workshop, we'll delve into the various facets of Pica. We'll explore the potential underlying factors, such as nutritional deficiencies, developmental conditions, or poor mental health. We'll examine the physical, social, and emotional consequences Pica can have on individuals and their families.
But most importantly, we'll equip you with the knowledge and skills to confidently identify and address Pica. We'll discuss best practices for supporting individuals with Pica, explore intervention strategies, and learn how to collaborate effectively with healthcare professionals and families.
What will I learn?
After you have attended this workshop you will:
• be able to recognise the signs and symptoms of Pica
• have an overview of possible causes of Pica
• understand the associated risks
• understand your role in relation to supervision and management of risk
• have an 'ecological' understanding of the prevention and management of Pica
• know how to respond in an emergency
Who is it for?
Carers and support staff from education, health and social care. The workshop can be adapted for parent/carer audiences
Level
All our autism and learning disability training is mapped to the Core Capabilities Framework for staff in health, social care, and other sectors.
Delivery
Trainer presentation, video, discussion and post-course resources and activity.
Available as a half/whole day 'face to face' workshop or a 2 hour live online via Zoom

We can help with evaluating the effectiveness of the training and give you a report based on both the experiences of your learners and the trainer.
